Legend to Figure 1. Alignments of the amino acid sequences of the MGSA/GRO-alpha precursor protein (GRO-HUMAN), macrophage inflammatory protein-2-alpha (GRO-beta) and the 4 regions identified in clone 3B516 that matched to either the MGSA/GRO-alpha precursor protein (sequences 1-3, listed in order of statistical significance) or to a distantly related alpha chemokine (sequence 4). Amino acids in GRO-beta and sequences 1-3 that match to those in GRO-human are underlined. The deduced amino acid sequence coded by a nucleotide insert in sequence 2 is shown below the portions of the sequence that do match. The insert began with a non coding codon indicated by the symbol # in place of an amino acid. Asterisks (*) are positioned above the cysteines involved in disulphide bonding within the GRO-HUMAN chemokine.
